As Shakespeare once wrote, “Some men are born with greatness, some men achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” This is true in many cases, and it is particularly true when it comes to the raw talent of Eric Chang.
Born in 1990, Eric is a very talented young photographer; in fact he is the youngest photographer I’ve met and known who has had more brilliant career experiences and opportunities than most men nearing retirement. At his young age it is already evident that he is a photographer who was born with clear talent, has been achieving such greatness in his field that it is evident and most would agree: when it comes to art and photography, greatness has been thrust upon him.
Eric has been called upon to develop portfolios of personal portraits of famous Indonesian figures – from musicians, to movie stars, scientist, doctor, fashion gurus and even photographers. Some of these people include, but are not limited to: 3 Diva, Addie MS, Luna Maya, Dominique Agisca Diyose, Nicholas Saputra, Dr. Eka Julianta Wahjoepramono.
In developing his skills, I observe that Eric has a great initiative, creativity and determination to learn and succeed. Regarding his portfolio, Eric has manage to challenge himself in producing a very glamorous yet creative photographs. His skill does not only lie in the process of shooting but also in the process towards the finishing of a photograph. He have the skills to produce, shoot and edit the photographs himself. This in fact have helped him in shaping and finding his own distinctive style of art.
To be honest, I find Eric’s eye to be quite different from other people. When capturing a photograph, I find a very distintive style towards his implementations to photography. Communications, interactions, sharings and laughters he had with his subjects, has always become the things that he cherishes all the time. He believes that by the approach, he can capture the essence and soul of his subject’s character.
After all, Eric is extremely accomplished for someone of his age, yet he is continually working on furthering his career and opportunities. He is a prime example of someone who was born great and is achieving greatness daily and the world can do nothing but sit back, watch and appreciate.

I love love love love love love love the photos!
Does he sell them?
Put them on the auction and spare some money to benefit nonprofit organization like Rachel’s House (my personal favorite).
He’s very talented, bet he’s going to be BIG.
Remember to contribute! Allah bless you!

HAH?? Does Indra really wrote that? OMG!
Eric is a joke.. Maybe for the next couple of years he’s gonna be something.. but not now… Doesn’t have any consistent style, only copying from other great shooters, the pictures dont speak anything.
Have a good networking & shoot them doesnt mean you’re a great photographer.. Come on people…
Well, again this is just my personal view…

of course eric is not a joke… he’s a talented young man. he’s still young, he’s still learning (everybody does too), experience is important. learning is a progress and progress is part of learning. nothings wrong with learning. not that bad as you say anyway. yes some of the pics are to ‘bold’ or ‘raw’ in telling the implicit meaning, and the way he writes the titles, tooo explicit.
are you a photographer too socialwatcher?
oh my god he’s still 18, very very young. he can be the next david lachapelle, or patrick demarchelier, or mario testino, or steven meisel, or annie leibovitz of indo. i’ll always pray for you deh ric. i love to see your new works, keep them coming yah. can’t wait to see your next exhibition..
can on? // May 6, 2008 at 12:44 am |
He’s more into fashion photography I think. Indra Leonardi bukan orang sembarangan loh, if he writes so, it means so. I don’t understand sih, I’m not a photographer anyway.
Maybe Eric has to team up like Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. He does the shoots (& connection
), the other one creates the concept to make the picture more meaningful.
All the best, ok?

When an artist already make a single exhibition it means they already believe that their art is something different, never been seen before, and seen as a new perspective. If one open an exhibition when he still copying other people’s work, it’s a total joke for me. It would never happened in other countries. Why people is so blind? Guess, money can buy publicity stunt in this country.
Indra could be the Leibovitz of Indonesia, or Davy Linggar the Paolo Roversi or Kay Moreno the Mario Testino, but not someone who doesnt know any better. Oh please..
I’m not a photographer, don’t think necessarily to be one to give reviews about it. I’m just a regular who have senses & talk abt it

Sure he has a great connection… And is now being advertised here, to Indo’s socialites. Smart move.
But I think on eday he will be able to have his own signature style. He’s precocious for now.
I think writing constructive comments is good for his learning progress. Maybe he got a single exhibition because of his (connection, yes) and age. For a 18 years old guy, still, he’s unbelievable.
Expanding your market to the socialites, young man?
I think one day he will be famous. Starting at a very young age he is.

Apakah berkenan apabila saya meng-copy gambar Iwan Tirta – Sang Legenda Batik, untuk saya posting di sebuah forum yang membahas tentang batik Indonesia?
Terima kasih.

its not like im jealous or anything, but me and my other photographer friends think that ericchang is such a joke. and what i heard from the source, is that he doesn’t even set his own lighting. he’s got a a team from oktagon to take care of his stuffs. so he only snap the camera. and the angles are not even that impressing nor flattering. well mr. chang, you got money, you can get the best tools ever– nice lighting sets, a team that takes care of your digital imaging, lighting, and stuffs, and you even got the money for a hasselblad phase one and a canon eos 1ds mk II if i am not mistaken. well– of course the tools aren’t really helping, but geez eric, get a better DI artist, you still have that wrinkles on sebastian gunawan’s dress.
me and most of the photographers i know think that his photoworks are nothing without all the props and the lighting sets. and his angles are not that flattering, and his ideas are not that original. so eric chang, how if now i give you a canon powershot camera and no lighting and no superior props? can you still make decent pictures? and i said decent. like your pictures now. well, they are not bad, they are pretty decent, but we can still see how you are not that creative with your pictures. we wouldn’t say that you have no talent in photography, cause we are no one to judge so, but jeez be creative. and dont be tool minded.
one big question,
do you like photography? or you just take it for granted?
im sorry if my comment is offensive. so sorry.
photography mistress // February 10, 2009 at 11:01 pm |
even nicoline patricia still uses canon eos 5d mk ii and she shoots for commercials. so is jacky suharto and lots more photographers.
im sorry eric chang, its just that you need to be more creative. okay you got money to get all those fancy tools, and i can say that you are really lucky. but be more creative and dont get too proud too quickly, cz thats what i see. correct me if im wrong.
its just that i think its such a waste if you have to waste such a giga-huge opportunity.

Eric is my highschool senior; he’s graduated now, and I think photography mistress may have a point about how he has everything arranged for him. Although it does give him a great advantage, I think that there is a notable amount of talent involved here. It’s true it’s significant that he can buy all the nicest cameras and gadgets and have the best props set up, but as an 18 year old I think he’s still given to splurging on his tools and things like that.
Give him a few years and hopefully Eric will develop his art thoroughly and become comfortable enough in his own style to rely less and less on expensive tools and props.
Personally I think the comment *was* rather harsh, but you had a point, photography mistress.
